The city of military glory is the honorary title of the Russian Federation conferred on certain cities of the Russian Federation “for courage, stamina and mass heroism shown by the city’s defenders in the struggle for freedom and independence of the Fatherland”.
The Regulation on the conditions and procedure for awarding the honorary title of the Russian Federation “City of Military Glory” was approved by decree of the President of the Russian Federation dated December 1, 2006 No. 1340.
In the city awarded the title "City of Military Glory":
1) a stele is installed with the image of the coat of arms of the city and the text of the decree of the President of the Russian Federation on assigning this rank to the city;2) public events and fireworks are held on February 23 ( Defender of the Fatherland Day ), May 9 ( Victory Day ), as well as on City Day or on the day of the liberation of the city from Nazi invaders (e.g. Tikhvin ).
Decree of the President of the Russian Federation No. 557 dated April 27, 2007 amended the provisions on the conditions and procedure for conferring the honorary title “City of Military Glory”.
As of April 6, 2015, there were 45 cities of military glory.

History
On May 7, 2007, the first graduation ceremony was held on awarding the honorary title “City of Military Glory”. The certificates were received by the heads of the administrations of Belgorod, Kursk, and Orel [1] .
On November 7, 2007, Russian President Vladimir V. Putin presented letters of honor to the mayors of Vladikavkaz, Yelny, Yelts, Malgobek, and Rzhev in the Catherine’s Hall of the Moscow Kremlin [2] .
On February 16, 2008, Russian President Vladimir V. Putin issued a decree on conferring the city of military glory title to the city of Voronezh.
On September 4, 2009, in the city of Dmitrov, Moscow Region, the first memorial stele [3] “City of Military Glory” was inaugurated.
On March 25, 2010, Russian President Dmitry A. Medvedev signed decrees on conferring the honorary title on the cities: Volokolamsk , Bryansk , Vyborg , Kalach-on-Don , Nalchik [4] .
On November 4, 2010, Russian President Dmitry A. Medvedev signed decrees on conferring the honorary title on the cities: Vladivostok , Tikhvin , and Tver .
On June 22, 2011, Russian President Dmitry A. Medvedev presented certificates of honor to the cities of Anapa , Kolpino , Stary Oskol and the honorary title “City of Military Glory”.
On November 3, 2011, Russian President D. A. Medvedev signed decrees on conferring the honorary title on the cities: Kovrov , Lomonosov , Taganrog , Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky [5] .
On February 23, 2012, Russian President D. A. Medvedev handed over letters of honor to the cities of Kovrov , Lomonosov , Taganrog , Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky [6] .
On May 7, 2012, Russian President Vladimir V. Putin signed decrees on conferring the honorary title “City of Military Glory” on the cities of Maloyaroslavets and Mozhaysk .
On November 3, 2012, Russian President Vladimir V. Putin signed a decree awarding the honorary title “City of Military Glory” to the city of Khabarovsk [7] .
On April 6, 2015, Russian President Vladimir V. Putin signed decrees on conferring the honorary title “City of Military Glory” on the cities of Staraya Russa , Gatchina , Petrozavodsk , Grozny and Feodosiya [~ 1] [8] .

Steles of Cities of Military Glory
The architectural and sculptural solution of the memorial stele “City of Military Glory” was approved by the Russian Organizing Committee “Victory” based on the results of an open all-Russian competition. The authors of the typical recommended composition are Honored Architect of Russia I. N. Voskresensky , G. A. Ishkildin , V. V. Perfiliev , Honored Artist of Russia S. A. Shcherbakov [52] [53] .
The commemorative stele is a column of the Doric order, crowned with the emblem of the Russian Federation, mounted on a pedestal in the center of the square square. On the front of the pedestal is a cartouche with the text of the Presidential Decree on conferring the title “City of Military Glory”, on the back of the pedestal is a cartouche with the coat of arms of the city. At the corners of the square, sculptural bas-reliefs are installed depicting events in connection with which the city was awarded the honorary title of the Russian Federation “City of Military Glory”.

After restoration, the memorial architectural ensemble “ Tomb of the Unknown Soldier ” was opened in 2010 in the Alexander Garden near the Moscow Kremlin. As part of the memorial complex, a stele appeared containing the names of all cities of military glory of Russia.
Coin Series “Cities of Military Glory”
In 2011, the Bank of Russia began issuing a series of coins “Cities of Military Glory” . Coins are made of steel with brass plating. In 2011, 8 coins of this series were issued (Belgorod, Kursk, Orel, Vladikavkaz, Malgobek, Rzhev, Yelets, Yelnya) [54] . In 2012, 8 coins of this series were issued (Voronezh, Luga, Polyarny, Rostov-on-Don, Tuapse, Velikiye Luki, Veliky Novgorod, Dmitrov). In 2013, 8 coins were issued (Vyazma, Kronstadt, Naro-Fominsk, Pskov, Kozelsk, Arkhangelsk, Volokolamsk, Bryansk). In 2014, 8 coins were issued (Nalchik, Vyborg, Stary Oskol, Vladivostok, Tikhvin, Tver, Anapa, Kolpino). In 2015, 9 coins were issued (Grozny, Kalach-on-Don, Kovrov, Lomonosov, Taganrog, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Maloyaroslavets, Mozhaysk, Khabarovsk [55] . In 2016, coins dedicated to Staraya Russa, Petrozavodsk, Gatchina, Feodosia [were issued ] 56] .
