Freespire comes from the Linspire distribution. Freespire 1.0 was based on the Debian distribution, and Freespire 2.0 was based on the Ubuntu distribution. Linspire was acquired by Xandros [3] , which decided to return to Debian as the basis for future versions of Freespire. [four]
On January 1, 2018, PC / Open Systems announced that it had acquired Linspire from Xandros and released Freespire 3.0. While Linspire 7 is available for $ 79.99, Freespire 3.0 is free [5] [6] .

History
In August 2005, a Live CD -based distribution based on Linspire source code called Freespire hit the network by accident [7] . This distribution was created by Andrew Betts and was not released by Linspire Inc. Then Linspire on the back of the created ad offered users “free Linspire” using the “Freespire” coupon code until September 9, 2005 . Squiggle OS was no longer under active development.
April 24, 2006 Linspire announced its project under the name "Freespire" [8] . The new Freespire distribution was then announced by Linspire President and former CEO Kevin Carmoni. Just like Fedora has been supported by Red Hat and the community since 2003. Novell also launched a similar community project called openSUSE for its SUSE Linux product line in the second half of 2005 .
Xandros acquired Linspire and Freespire in the summer of 2008 [9] . Xandros planned to keep Freespire as a community developed by a distribution similar to the openSUSE and Fedora distributions for their respective commercial distributions.
The final release of Freespire 2.0.8, was released on November 30, 2007 [10] . The version was based on Ubuntu 7.04, which was supported for 18 months and reached the end of support on October 19, 2008 . Status is now considered “active” in DistroWatch .
Features
A Debian- based distribution supported by the community and supported by a project related to the commercial Linspire distribution. Freespire includes previously proprietary elements from Linspire, such as the Click N 'Run client (CNR), while other elements that Linspire itself licenses but does not belong, such as the Windows Media Audio compatibility library, remain proprietary source code , therefore, there are two versions of Freespire: one with closed source libraries, and the other called Freespire OSS Edition, which mainly includes open source components . Freespire has a number of native programs written in Haskell and OCaml, such as an ISO image creator, hardware detection and auto-configuration, auto-object packages and the “Debian library”, as well as programs that run CGI .
