Biography

Born on August 14, 1919 in Petrograd .

In 1939 he entered LETI . Member of the Finnish campaign . During World War II, he volunteered for the front. Injury and concussion left their mark in the life of V.B. Smolov - he left the hospital as a war invalid. He worked as senior military instructor of the All-Union Pioneer Camp Artek (January 1943 - June 1944) [1] , trained soldiers of the Red Army .

He worked at LETI since 1944 . He went from a laboratory assistant to the head of the department of computer engineering, the largest department of this profile in the Soviet Union , which he directed for thirty-five years ( 1954 - 1989 ).

Vladimir Borisovich was at the origins of the domestic system of training engineering and scientific personnel in the specialty "Electronic Computers ( COMPUTER )" and "Computer Software." He is the main participant in the development of model curricula and programs, the author of the country's first textbooks and manuals on analog, digital and hybrid computers.

He founded the scientific direction and the scientific school on methods and means of improving the operational and technical characteristics and functional capabilities of computer technology . He prepared as a scientific adviser and consultant more than 150 candidates and 30 doctors of technical sciences. He personally published 160 and co-authored 340 scientific works, including 10 of the world's first monographs on hybrid and digital functional information converters.

Member of several All-Union commissions and councils, including the Higher Attestation Commission ( HAC ) of the USSR ( 1966 - 1978 ), the Commission of the USSR Academy of Sciences on high-performance computers and systems ( 1970 - 1980 ), the USSR National Committee for Mathematical Modeling ( 1966 - 1985 ), deputy Chairman of the Scientific and Methodological Commission on Computing and Instrumentation of the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education of the USSR ( 1960 - 1980 ).

He is the author of a number of publications on military-patriotic education, including the book: “The Letians in the Fights for the Homeland” (1997).

He died on November 21, 2009 in St. Petersburg .
