Papacy
During the period of Pontificate Clement XIII, a struggle began against the Jesuit Order , whose influence at the royal courts raised great concern both among the local clergy and among the main political advisers of many European monarchs. The position of Clement XIII was uncertain. He did not dare to dissolve the order, which was expected of him, and with the help of agreements he tried to postpone this decision.
In 1764, Clement XIII condemned the work of Bishop Johann Nicholas von Gontheim , using the pseudonym Justin Febronius, which criticized the supremacy of the Roman bishop. This was a new version of the old doctrine of concillarism. Febronianism has won many supporters in the German Empire and in Austria .
