Biography
It is believed that Anter was a Greek freedman born in Petilia-Policastro, Calabria [3] [4] .
Some scholars believe that he was tortured [4] [5] . Other scholars doubt this and believe that Anter died in non-dramatic circumstances during the persecution by the emperor Maximinus of Thracian [6] .
Anter was buried in the Roman catacombs of St. Callist in the papal crypt. His gravestone was discovered by Giovanni Battista de Rossi in 1854 . On the plate, half-worn remains of Greek epitaph are preserved. His ashes were taken to the church of St. Sylvester on the Field of Mars [3] and was discovered on November 17, 1595 , when Pope Clement VIII rebuilt the church [4] .
Revered as a saint, the day of remembrance among Catholics on January 3 , among the Orthodox on August 5 (according to the Julian calendar ).
