The street was so named in July 1950 in honor of the Soviet military pilot Nikolai Frantsevich Gastello , Hero of the Soviet Union posthumously.

at 7, until 2008, there was a Zenit cinema. The building was demolished. In its place, despite public protests and the protected area of the monument of architecture - the Chesme Palace, it was planned to build a 33-story high-rise building. As of 2018, no work was carried out on the site of the demolished cinema.
