History
The village was first shown on the map of Schubert 1826-1840 as Popovna (Kovalevka). [2] On subsequent maps, for example, in 1870, edited by Strelbitsky [3] Kovalevka in the vicinity of Popovna is no longer there. Most likely, Kovalevka is a settlement that was previously located on the site of Popovna.
In 1857, the village of Popovka had a population of 180 parishioners of both sexes belonging to the Pokrovsky church in the village of Pochinichi (parish priest Stefan Verbitsky). At the same time, the village of Pochinichi was located in Klimovichi, and the village of Popovka was in the Mstislavsky district of the Mogilev province. The village of Popovka was located "at the well", i.e. had no natural body of water nearby. [four]
As of 1834, the village of Popovna belonged to the landowner Stanislav Komar, in 1858 - to his six heirs Apollo, Ignatius, Josephine, Mary, Luisia and Rosalia Komar.
In 1919, the village of Popovka, along with other settlements of the Mstislavsky district, was transferred from Mogilev to the Smolensk province.
During the Great Patriotic War, the village was occupied by Nazi troops in August 1941 , liberated in September 1943 . [five]
In the village of Popovka there is a mass grave of 3 unknown soldier-pilots. [one]
