It is located in the southwestern part of the region, 10 km north-east of Khislavichi , 17 km west of the A141 Orel - Vitebsk highway, on the banks of the Vydra River. 19 km east of the village is the Vaskovo railway station on the Smolensk - Roslavl line .
History
The first mention of the village is in the List of populated areas of Smolensk province from 1859. There, it is listed as the village of Roslavl Uyezd Sloboda Zelenaya with 11 yards and 118 inhabitants.
According to the maps of the Red Army 1924.1926 it already has the name simply Sloboda and has 44 yards.
During the Great Patriotic War, the village was occupied by Nazi troops in July 1941 , liberated in September 1943 . [one]
