Round Jersey Towers - a system of defensive towers built on the island of Jersey to defend against France in the late XVIII - early XIX centuries.
The plan for building a system of defensive towers along the coast of the island was developed by the governor of the island, General Henry Seymour Conway ; (1721–1795). The construction of the towers began in 1778. The towers were built of granite, at the foot of each of the towers were artillery batteries .. Before Conway's death in 1795. Construction of the tower 22 towers continued after the death of Conway it was built, but the project has changed the towers, new tower built on the model of the so-called towers Martello new towers were below the towers Conv project. I have, moreover, an artillery battery of new towers located at the top of towers rather than at the bottom, like Conway towers.
At the end of XVIII - beginning of XIX, eight more Martello towers were built, and in 1837 the last military tower - Victoria Tower - was built on the island. Thus, a total of 31 towers were built in Jersey, including 22 Conway towers and 9 Martello towers.
To this day, 24 towers have survived. Six towers of the Conway type and one Martello type tower were not preserved.
