Reunion Arch

Reunion Arch

Reunion Arch (“Three Charter Arch”) ( cor. 조국 통일 3 대헌장 기념탑 ) is an arch located in Pyongyang , the capital of North Korea .

The arch is also called the “Arch of Three Charter” (pay attention to the Korean inscription under the map of Korea with the number “3”) in honor of three declarations signed by representatives of the DPRK and the Republic of Kazakhstan on July 4, 1972. Then the Joint Statement of the North and the South was published, which contained three basic principles of unification:

  • to unite on their own, without the intervention of third forces;
  • ensure national unity regardless of differences in ideology, beliefs and different political systems;
  • reunite the motherland peacefully without the intervention of the armed forces.

The arch was erected in 2001 to commemorate this joint declaration on Thongyr Avenue at the southern entrance to Pyongyang.

The Arch depicts a map of a united Korea , supported by two Koreans in national traditional dresses. Under the Reunification Arch, there is a four-lane Reunion Highway that connects Pyongyang to the Demilitarized Zone .

At the base of the monument are various inscriptions in support of unification and peace from various people, organizations and nations.
