Sodium picosulfate is a laxative, a derivative of triarylmethane . It acts only at the level of the colon . The sulfate radical is cleaved from the sodium picosulfate molecule due to the activity of sulfatase-producing bacteria living in the colon, and the drug turns into its active form - free diphenol . It stimulates the receptors of the mucous membrane of the colon and enhances its peristalsis.

Laxative effect develops 6-12 hours after administration.
After ingestion of sodium, picosulfate is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and does not undergo hepatic-intestinal circulation.
Minor amounts of diphenol are detected in the systemic circulation and in the urine. There was no association between the laxative effect of Guttalax and the concentration of active diphenol in the blood.
In Russia, sodium picosulfate is registered under the trade names Guttalax, Guttasil, Laksigal-Teva, Pikodinar, Regulaks picosulfate, Slabikap, Slabilen. There is also a combined drug "Pikoprep."
Content
Indications for use
All types of constipation , both atonic (constipation associated with a decrease in the motor activity of the colon) and spastic (constipation associated with involuntary contractions of the colon). It is especially indicated for constipation associated with diet , immobility, pregnancy , overweight, to cleanse the intestines in preparation for operations, etc. It is used to facilitate bowel movement in patients suffering from hemorrhoids (swelling and inflammation of the veins of the rectum), anal fissures ( cracks in the anus), in the postoperative period.
Side
With prolonged use of the drug in significantly higher doses, violations are possible:
- From the water-electrolyte balance: loss of potassium and other electrolytes .
- From the digestive system: rarely - dyspeptic symptoms, diarrhea .
With short-term use of the drug, side effects are rare.
Contraindications
- intestinal obstruction;
- strangulated hernia ;
- acute inflammatory diseases of the abdominal organs (including peritonitis );
- abdominal pain of unknown origin ;
- gastrointestinal bleeding ;
- spastic constipation ;
- severe dehydration ;
- metrorrhagia ;
- cystitis
- I trimester of pregnancy;
- hypersensitivity to sodium picosulfate and other components of the drug.
Pregnancy and lactation
There was no negative effect of Guttalax on the course of pregnancy and fetal development, however, the drug should be used during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, only if the expected benefit to the mother outweighs the possible risk to the fetus.
To understand when you can take the medication, you just need to carefully study the table. Everything is pretty clearly shown here. [one]

| Contraindicated, may cause miscarriage. | Allowed under medical supervision. | It is possible, but only if the positive from the remedy exceeds the existing risks. |
Sodium picosulfate is not excreted in breast milk, but if you need to use Guttalax during lactation, you should stop breastfeeding.
In experimental studies, no mutagenic and teratogenic effects of the drug were detected.
Special instructions
Guttalax should not be taken daily for a long time.
Pediatric Use
In children, Guttalax is used only for strict indications. It is impractical for infants to prescribe the drug due to the insufficient development of sulfate-producing intestinal flora.
Experimental Results
In studies conducted on laboratory animals, no toxic and carcinogenic effects of the drug were detected.
Overdose
- Symptoms: intestinal colic , diarrhea , clinically significant loss of potassium and other electrolytes.
- Treatment: conduct symptomatic therapy.
Drug Interactions
With the simultaneous use of Guttalax in high doses and diuretics or corticosteroids, an increased risk of electrolyte disturbances is possible.
The electrolyte imbalance that occurs while taking Guttalax in high doses can lead to a deterioration in the tolerance of cardiac glycosides .
The simultaneous administration of broad-spectrum antibiotics can reduce the laxative effect of Guttalax.
Composition
4,4- (2- Picolylidene ) - diphenol sulfate .
1 ml (15 drops) contains 7.5 mg of sodium picosulfate . Also included in the preparation: sodium methyl parahydroxybenzoate , sorbitol 70%, hydrochloric acid , purified water.
