Plasminogen tissue activator is a protein belonging to the group of secreted proteases that turns the pro-enzyme plasminogen into an active form — plasmin , which is a fibrinolytic enzyme. It is synthesized as a single chain of amino acids that combines with plasminogen using disulfide bridges. Participates in the processes of tissue remodeling and cell migration. Hyperactivation of the enzyme leads to increased bleeding, reduced activity - to the inhibition of fibrinolysis, which can lead to thrombosis and embolism.

Genetics
As a result of alternative splicing , three transcript variants can be generated from a single gene.
Application
Recombinant tissue plasminogen activator is used in the treatment of diseases associated with thrombus formation: these are ( myocardial infarction , pulmonary embolism and ischemic stroke ). For full effectiveness, the drug must be administered within the first 6 hours. In medical practice, alteplaz is used under the name Aktilize and is produced by the German pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim .
