Before reaching the final, the teams went through five rounds. Both teams started their way from the third qualifying round, passed it and won the first places in their groups before getting into the playoff stage . In the 1 ⁄ 8 finals, Milan beat Celtic Scottish , scoring the decisive goal in overtime of the second match. “Liverpool” at the same stage won defending the title of the Spanish “ Barcelona ” according to the rule of a goal scored in a foreign field . In 1 ⁄ 4 finals, Milan beat German Bavaria , while Liverpool beat Dutch PSV . In the semifinals, both teams were opposed by English teams: Milan played against Manchester United , and Liverpool against London Chelsea . In the sum of two matches, Milan won United 5: 3, and Liverpool beat Chelsea 4: 1 in a penalty shootout (playing time ended with a score of 1: 1).

Before the match, there were problems with tickets, because the number of fans who wanted to attend this match exceeded the number of available seats in the stadium. After the match, UEFA called Liverpool fans "the worst in Europe." The match was attended by 74 thousand spectators. Milan opened the scoring in the 45th minute with the efforts of Filippo Inzaghi , who scored from a free kick from Andrea Pirlo . In the second half, Milan doubled the lead with Inzaghi's second goal in the 82nd minute. Liverpool scored one goal thanks to Dirk Keith's accurate shot in the 89th minute, but this was not enough to translate the game into overtime. Milan won the match 2-1 and won the seventh European Cup in its history.

Path to the final

Milan

Before the start of the match Milan - Lille at San Siro

“Milan” entered the Champions League, taking 3rd place in the national championship [2] . According to the results of the championship itself, Milan was second, but due to a corruption scandal, 30 points were removed from the team, and it dropped to the line below [2] [3] . By the initial decision (which was contested), Milan was also excluded from the Champions League [3] . The second place, which the team initially had, would give the right to start immediately from the group stage, and the third place, to which the team went down from Milan , - only the “ticket” to the third qualifying round.

Opponents of the Italians in this round was the Serbian “ Red Star ”. Two victories, at home 1: 0 and away 2: 1, allowed the “Milan” to go into the group stage. As a result of the draw, the team got into Group H with the Greek AEK , the Belgian Anderlecht and the French Lille . Milan won 3 matches, made a draw 1 and lost 2, becoming the leader of the group with 10 points and making it to the playoffs [4] .

In 1/8 finals, “Milan” was drawn by drawing lots with the Scottish “ Celtic ”. The first match played at a party at the Celtic Park stadium ended in a goalless draw. The return match, which took place at home at San Siro , also in 90 minutes of normal time did not bring a single goal thanks to the competent play of the defenders of the Scottish club. However, three minutes after the start of the extra time, Kaka ferried the ball past Polish goalkeeper Arthur Boruc and thus brought Milan ahead. “Celtic” could not even the score, and the Italians reached the quarterfinal [5] [6]

In the quarterfinals, "Milan" met with the German " Bavaria ". The first match that the teams played at San Siro ended in a 2-2 draw, while Bayern scored the second goal in the third minute of the second half [7] . The second game was played at the Allianz Arena , which, however, did not prevent Milan from winning 2: 0 in the match, 4: 2 in the sum of two meetings and reaching the semifinals [8] .

The semifinal draw brought the Italian club to English Manchester United . The first match was a guest at the Old Trafford stadium. Thanks to the “double” of Kaka, “Milan” led in this match 2: 1, despite the goal scored by Cristiano Ronaldo . However, two goals scored by Wayne Rooney in the second half brought victory to the British, 3: 2 [9] . In the second match, which was held at San Siro, Milan won 3-0 (in the sum of two meetings 5: 3) and reached the final [10] [11] .

Liverpool

Liverpool made it to the Champions League, becoming the third in the national championship . According to the position of England in the UEFA ranking, the third league team went into the third qualifying round. In this round, Liverpool played against the Israeli Maccabi club (Haifa) . The English club won the first match, played at Liverpool's home stadium, Enfield , 2: 1, and played a draw in the away match, 1: 1, which allowed the Liverpool team to reach the group stage. There, Liverpool fell into Group C, which also included French Bordeaux , Dutch PSV , and Turkish Galatasaray . After six games, among which there were 4 wins, a draw and a defeat, Liverpool with 13 points left the first place in the group in the playoffs [4] .

Players of "Barcelona" and "Liverpool" take to the field " Camp Nou "

At the stage of 1/8 finals, Liverpool was drawn by drawing the Spanish “ Barcelona ” defending the title . Before the first match in Barcelona, an internal team conflict between Craig Bellamy and John Arne Riise emerged [12] . However, it was thanks to the goals of these two players that Liverpool won a guest victory over the Spaniards, 2: 1, having won back and stepped forward after the early goal from Deco [13] . The second match, which was held at Enfield, ended with the victory of Barcelona with a minimum score of 1: 0, but Liverpool reached the quarterfinal thanks to the goal goal scored away [6] .

The opponent of Liverpool in the quarter-finals was the Dutch PSV, with whom the English club was already playing in the group stage. The first match, which took place on the road, at the Philips Stadium, brought a major victory for Liverpool with a score of 3: 0. The second match, played at Enfield, was held in a bitter struggle, but Liverpool won again, now with the score 1: 0, and, having won by the sum of two matches 4: 0, the English team advanced to the semi-finals [8] [14] .

The next opponent of Liverpultsev became familiar from the performances on the national arena club Chelsea . The first match took place in London, at Stamford Bridge Stadium, and the support of their stands helped the Chelsea player Joe Cole to open the scoring [15] . The second match was also held with Chelsea advantage, but Liverpool won 1: 0 thanks to a goal from Daniel Agger . According to the results of two matches, the score was 1: 1, the rule of a goal scored in a foreign field did not work, because no one scored in the away matches, therefore, at first, additional time was played, in which none of the teams could score, and then a series of penalty , following which Liverpool won 4-1 and reached the final [16] [11] .

Match

Before the match

The 2007 final was 11th for Milan in the European Cup and the Champions League that replaced it. Prior to that, the Italian team won six ( 1963 , 1969 , 1989 , 1990 , 1994 , 2003 ), and lost four ( 1958 , 1993 , 1995 , 2005 ) finals out of ten [20] . For Liverpool, it was the seventh final. Prior to that, the English team won five times ( 1977 , 1978 , 1981 , 1984 , 2005 ) and lost only once - in the 1985 final to the Italian Juventus . The same two teams met in the finals in 2005, when Liverpool won 3: 2 in the penalty shootout , having played 3 goals before, scored by Milan in the first half [20] .

The Olympic Stadium in Athens was chosen to host the 2007 UEFA Champions League final match in April 2005 at a meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee in Tallinn ( Estonia ). At this meeting, the venues for the 2006 Champions League finals and the final matches of the 2006 and 2007 UEFA Cup matches were also decided [21] . After the victory of Barcelona in the finals of 2006, the Cup was awarded to team captain Louis Julie right at the stadium. Further, UEFA President Michel Platini presented the 2007 trophy , Nikitas Kaklamanis , after which the mayor drove the Cup around the city [22] .

Prior to this, the Olympic Stadium hosted the Champions League final in 1994 . It is worth noting that the match won just Milan, defeating Barcelona 4-0. In addition, the 1983 final was held at the same stadium, in which Hamburg beat Juventus with a minimum score of 1: 0. The stadium also hosted the Cup Winners Cup final in 1987 , in which the Dutch Ajax defeated Lokomotiv from Leipzig 1: 0 [23] .

Adidas , the ball manufacturer for all major tournaments under the auspices of UEFA, FIFA and IOC , presented the ball for the final at the ceremony on March 9, 2007. The ball was called “Adidas Finale Athens”. The ball drawn blue stars on a white background, which corresponded to the white and blue colors of the national flag of Greece [24] . In the final, two of the three top scorers in the Champions League that season met. The player of Milan Kaka was the leader of the bombing race with 10 goals, and the player of Liverpool Peter Crouch - the third with 6 goals scored [25] .

Despite the fact that Milan nominally was a home team, the Italians played in a guest, white with red stripes, uniform; this form was called “happy” ( Italian. maglia fortunata ), because before this, Milan had won the Champions League five times. However, the Italians lost twice in the finals, playing in this form, including the defeat against Liverpool in 2005 [26] . Liverpool also played in its traditional homely monochrome-red uniform. All the European Cup and Champions League finals were won by the English team in a completely red uniform, two of which were won against the Italian teams that played in all white [20] .

"Milan" has exposed the most age structure from ever Champions League participants in finals. The average age of the team was 31 years and 34 days. Paolo Maldini was the oldest field player to take part in this match - on the day of the game he was 38 years old and 331 days [27] . Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti released striker Filippo Inzaghi in the starting lineup, where Alberto Gilardino played in the 2005 final. Liverpool coach Rafael Benitez put in 5 midfielders, including Jermaine Pennant and Budevein Zenden , who played around the edges, while Stephen Gerard played behind striker Dirk Kuyt . Liverpool fielded 5 players who played in the 2005 final: Xabi Alonso , Jamie Karagger , Steve Finnan , Steven Gerard and Jon Arne Riise [28] .

Pre-match Issues

Of the 63.8 thousand tickets on sale, only 9 thousand were freely available. Representatives of each of the teams participating in the final received 17 thousand seats, and the remaining 20.8 thousand tickets were distributed among UEFA sponsors [29] [30] . This caused some problems before the match. While the fans who were planning to attend the match were standing in line, the police made a statement that the stadium was already full and some fans would not be let into the stands regardless of whether they had tickets or not [31] . According to the UEFA, the 74,000-strong stadium tried to break through to 5 thousand free-wheeling fans. The police had to close the entrance gate, because if the launch of the fans continued, it could lead to a crush [32] . The situation was aggravated by the behavior of Liverpool fans who tried to break into the stadium even through the closed gate. It was necessary for the Greek detachment of the special purpose police to use tear gas and electric mace to pacify the crowd. UEFA Speaker spoke about the fans' behavior at the match. He called fans of Liverpool the cause of these riots, stating: “Milan fans didn’t face similar problems because they behaved in a completely different way ...” [33] .

In the post-match report, Liverpool fans were named “worst in Europe”, with a comment from Gaillard: “Did other fan clubs steal tickets from their own fans or from the hands of children?” [34] However, later UEFA President Michel Platini withdrew from fans the English team labeled “the worst in Europe” [35] , criticizing UEFA for not very high-quality check of tickets and the use of ineffective measures to disperse fans. Simon Gass, the British ambassador to Greece, said: “The fact that fake tickets were taken for real ones is a certain failure, and UEFA should investigate this failure” [36] . In addition, the co-owner of "Liverpool" Tom Hicks counted 17 thousand places for each team a very small quota given that the English team hoped to bring up to 40 thousand fans to the match. Hicks also blamed Gaillard for dumping organizational mistakes due to UEFA to Liverpool [37] .

First Half

Liverpool won the toss the ball from the center of the field and began the game [27] . Playing under the 4–2–3–1 scheme, the British made the first attack in the match, but Jermaine Pennant could not get a cross pass from Steven Gerard [27] . “Milan”, who chose the 4−4−1−1 scheme, responded with two low strikes, but Jamie Carragher blocked both. The second player, Liverpool, knocked to the corner, with the filing of which Milan almost scored [38] . The first serious chance for the English team appeared in the 9th minute. The mistake of Milan defender Marek Jankulovski allowed Pennant to go to the gate, pass the ball to Dirk Kuyt , who immediately returned the ball back, and hit Dida's goal, which the Brazilian goalkeeper managed [38] . A few minutes later, Gerard handed the pass over to Pennant, but Stephen was unable to reach the ball returned by Pennant [27] . A few minutes later, Milan made its first strike on target. Kaka took the ball outside the penalty area and shot from the right, but Liverpool goalkeeper José Reyna reflected the kick [27] . Liverpool continued to step up pressure on the defense of the Italians, especially on defender Massimo Oddo , who missed a pass from Pennant Gerard, who ultimately delivered a kick above the gate [27] .

Liverpool got another chance to score in the 27th minute. Gross mistakes in the defense of “Milan” led to the fact that Xabi Alonso received the transmission and almost at close range struck, which, however, passed by the gate [38] .
