The entry of the Romanian troops into the territory of the Moldavian Democratic Republic began after Sfatul Tarii showed loyalty to Romania. Romania sought to occupy Bessarabia , which became part of the Russian Empire in 1812 . She was prevented from doing this by Rumcherod and the local militia. In fact, an armed conflict was in MDR.
After the entire north of the MDR was occupied by Romanian troops, they tried to reach the Dniester . On January 29, Romanian units attempted to penetrate Bender, but met resistance, headed by G. Borisov . Romanian units were also opposed by the 5th and 6th Zaamur regiments stationed in the city at that time. On February 2, the city was re-assaulted, the Romanian troops managed to enter it, but they were thrown back to their original positions by the Bolshevik formations that arrived from behind the Dniester. After the fighting on February 7, Bender again came under the control of the Romanian troops, this time the units defending the city left it.
After taking Bender, the Romanian troops gathered about 3,000 people near the locomotive depot building, ordered them to remove their outerwear and kept them in the freezing weather all day. About 500 defenders of the city were shot near the fence, which later received the name "Black" [1] .
