Geography
Flatey Island is almost the largest of the approximately 40 islands in the Brady Fjord , off the west coast of Iceland. The island is 2 kilometers long and 0.5 kilometers wide. The island is home to several dozen people, it is connected to the Icelandic coast by ferry service.
History
In the 16th century, the last Catholic bishop of Iceland, John Arason, installed the country's first printing press on the island. Books printed on Flatey have not survived to this day.
Literary Monuments
In Iceland and in Europe, Flatey is known for the medieval literary monuments preserved here - the Annals of Flatey Island ( Flateyarannáll , X Century) and the Book from the Flat Island ( Flateyjarbók , XIV century), which also incorporated many sagas and legends.
