Biography

Bonfire was born in Amsterdam as the third child in a working class family. In 1908 he graduated from Haarlem College of Education, until 1913 he worked as a teacher. At the same time he attended lectures at the University of Leiden , where he was greatly influenced by P. Ehrenfest and which he graduated in 1916 . In 1916–20 he worked as an assistant to V. de Haas at Delft University of Technology , in 1920–22 he worked with M. Sigban at Lund University . In 1922 he defended his doctoral dissertation at the University of Leiden . In 1922–23 he worked at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen , and from 1924 he held a professorship at the University of Groningen . In 1934 he was elected a full member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences .

In 1938, L. Meitner helped to move from Nazi Germany to Sweden , during the Second World War he took an active part in saving the Jewish population.

Scientific activity

Coster's scientific works are devoted to atomic and nuclear physics , X-ray spectroscopy , and neutron physics . In 1923, together with D. Heveshi discovered the 72nd element - hafnium .
