Diving shell

Diving shell - a special form of artillery shell for the destruction of submarines by artillery of surface ships.

It was created during the First World War .

Ordinary shells as a result of falling into the water either exploded or ricocheted . To defeat underwater targets, the head of the diving shells was flattened or concave and the fuse deceleration was set.

Practice has shown low effectiveness of diving shells. During the Second World War, the main means of destroying submarines was a depth bomb .

Armored piercing diving shells were also developed in the Japanese Navy to destroy enemy ships below the waterline. The special shape of the projectile allowed him to maintain the trajectory after falling under water, and the delay of the fuse led to an explosion below the armor belt.
