The museum was founded in 1857 as the Museum of Natural History and Fine Arts at the Toronto Normal School. In 1912, the Ontario Provincial Government passed a decree on the Royal Ontario Museum. Until 1968, the museum was managed by the University of Toronto, then it became an independent institution, but so far it has close ties with the university, often seeks the help of its experts or provides its resources for research.
