Biography
Very little is known about the life of the artist. Karel van Mander, in his Book on the Artists , mentions that Bouts was born in Haarlem, lived and worked in Leuven, where he was an urban painter since 1468 . Bautz was influenced by Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden . The influence of Rogier van der Weyden in the works of Dirk Bouts can be traced particularly clearly, from which some researchers suggest that Dirk was his student.
In 1447, he married a girl from the well-to-do family of Catherine Van de Brugen from Leuven and moved there. The sons of the artist, Dirk the Younger and Albert , also became painters and collaborated in his father’s workshop. According to the documents of that time, Bouts was a very wealthy resident of Leuven and received the title of urban artist in 1468. He died in Leuven in 1475.
Creativity
The artist's style is characterized by careful elaboration of details and skillful use of light and shade [2] . In his works, there is a hidden drama, although, outwardly, Bautsom’s interpretation of even the most tragic scenes seems impassive [2] .
One of the most famous works by Bautz is the altar The Sacrament of Holy Communion (1464–1467), created by the artist at the request of the brotherhood of Holy Communion. The central part depicts the Last Supper ; On the sides are four scenes from the Old Testament. The originality of the work lies in the fact that Bouts was able to combine religious contemplation and detachment with a convincing depiction of the real world [3] . In terms of characters there is no idealization; The still-life depicting everyday objects - simple pottery, tin plates, broken bread, etc. - is organically inscribed in the religious scene.
