General information

Water goats are herbivorous antelopes of medium and large sizes. All species have long hair, which in particular in the genus of water goats makes an impression of shaggy. With the exception of coba , all species lack preorbital glands in front of the eyes, inherent in other representatives of the bovids. In this subfamily, only males have horns . In redoons and water goats, they are turned upward at the tip; in roe deer, they are straight.

Redunks and water goats are strongly attached to reservoirs and are found throughout sub- Saharan Africa . In contrast, the habitat of roe deer antelopes are mountainous areas. It is found only on the southern edge of the continent.

Systematics

  • Kobus - Water goats (genus)
    • Kobus ellipsiprymnus - Ordinary water goat , or water goat
    • Kobus megaceros - Sudanese goat , or Nile lychee
    • Kobus leche - Lychee (mammal)
    • Kobus kob - Kob
    • Kobus vardonii - Puku
  • Redunca - Redunks
    • Redunca redunca - Ordinary Redunka , or Upland
    • Redunca arundinum - Big Redunka , or Big Swamp Goat
    • Redunca fulvorufula - Mountain Redunka , or Mountain Swamp Goat
  • Pelea - Roe Antelope
    • Pelea capreolus - Roe antelope , or roe antelope , or pelea

While the close kinship between water goats and redunks is beyond dispute and is proved by morphological similarity (both genera are sometimes united in the Reduncini supergenus ), the identity of roe deer is not yet fully understood. Sometimes it is distinguished into a separate subfamily Peleinae . Due to its small size, it was also previously identified in the subfamily of dwarf antelopes ( Neotraginae ), which today is no longer recognized as a systematic taxon. There have been attempts to identify it also in the subfamily of true antelopes ( Antilopinae ). Molecular genetic studies, however, speak in favor of kinship with water goats and redunks, which is not yet recognized by all scientists.
