Geography

The island with an area of 4.5 hectares has dimensions of 375 m in length and not more than 50 m in width and rises above sea level to a maximum of 4 m. Sometimes during strong storms and hurricanes it is completely flooded by sea. The island is located 160 km south-west of Montserrat , 100 km west of Dominica and 480 km north of the coast of Venezuela.

The surface of the island is sandy, sometimes covered with sparse vegetation. The island is under threat of complete erosion, and the Venezuelan authorities are considering projects to strengthen it, so as not to lose the right to an exclusive economic zone around the island. As a result of the impact of Hurricane Allen in 1980, the island was divided into two parts, but soon they were again connected by a sandy bridge washed in by the currents.

The island stops for rest or nesting a variety of seabirds ; Green sea turtles ( Chelonia mydas ) also lay eggs here. The tiny island plays a huge role in preserving the green sea turtle population - this is one of the few places where this species of turtles lays eggs. From July to September, from 350 to 600 female turtles arrive on the island from all over the Caribbean. In 1972, the island declared a wildlife sanctuary.

Due to the low altitude, the island is very dangerous for navigation, in its vicinity there have been many shipwrecks. Venezuela maintains a naval research station on the island.

This island should not be confused with the ( Spanish Archipiélago Las Aves ), lying much closer to the Venezuelan coast.

Sovereignty

No country officially disputes the rights of Venezuela to the island. However, some Caribbean states (in particular, Dominica ) oppose the establishment of a 200-mile exclusive economic zone around the island, citing the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (which Venezuela did not sign). This convention prohibits the establishment of an economic zone wider than 12 nautical miles around small isolated uninhabited islands. Recently, Dominic is seriously considering the possibility of an official renewal of claims for sovereignty over the island.

History

Buildings of the Simon Bolivar Naval Research Station

The island was first discovered by Avaro Sanse ( Spanish Avaro Sanzze ) in 1584; he declared the island ownership of Spain , but he did not land on it. Later, Spain, Great Britain , Portugal and the Netherlands claimed rights to the islands. A dispute over affiliation that arose between the Netherlands and Venezuela in 1854 was referred to the Spanish queen Isabella II for arbitration, which, on June 30, 1865, ruled in favor of Venezuela. From 1878, American guano miners worked on the island. Development stopped in 1912 due to the depletion of stocks.

In 1950, a Venezuelan expedition, consisting of two coast guard boats and a transport vessel, landed a group of soldiers on the island, thus consolidating the island’s status as Venezuelan territory. In 1978, the Venezuelan Navy founded the permanent naval research station Simon Bolivar on the island. In 2004, the military expanded the station by building a special room for it on high piles, which is not so terrible Caribbean storms. A group of scientists and military specialists is constantly working on the island.
