Biography

St. Claudius was born in Franche-Comte in the family of a senator. After the ordination, he became a priest in Besancon. According to legend, after twelve years of service, he retired to the Condat monastery in the Jurassic Mountains . Now this place is called Saint-Claude . There he lived a holy ascetic life. St. Claude was appointed rector of the monastery. As rector, he paid special attention to the rule of the monastery to restore the monastery structures.

In 685, St. Claudius was elected Archbishop of Besancon, contrary to his advanced age and unwillingness to take this obligatory place. Nevertheless, he managed the archdiocese for seven years, after which he returned to Condat, whose leadership he retained during his archbishopric ministry. St. Claudius departed to the Lord at a very respectable age in 699.

It is also believed that he remained a parish priest until he was elected bishop and retired to the monastery only at the end of the episcopal ministry. The veneration of St. Claudius spread widely in the 12th century, when his body was found incorrupt. The place of his burial for many years attracted numerous pilgrims with cases of miraculous healings.
