Leyte ( Tagalog. Leyte ) - the province of the Philippines in the region of Eastern Visayas , on the island of the same name . The administrative center is the city of Tacloban . The province borders in the south with South Leyte , in the east - with the province of Samar on the neighboring island of the same name, in the north and west - with the island provinces of Biliran and Cebu .

Geography
The total area of the province is 5,712.8 km². In the east it is washed by the waters of the bay of the same name .
History
Some important facts in the history of the Philippines are associated with Leyte Island. During the Japanese occupation, an alliance of Filipino and American troops was formed here, defeating the Japanese forces (see the article " Tacloban ").

Population - 1,789,158 people (2010 year). The population density is 313.18 people / km². The local population speaks mostly Sebuano , and partially Samareño ( Austronesian ).
