The Legend of Jerome about Judas the Traitor

Birth of Judah (Old Believer illuminated manuscript “Passion of Christ”, 1860s)

The legend of Jerome about Judas the traitor is an anonymous composition - an apocrypha about the history of Judas Iscariot , erroneously attributed to blessed Jerome .

The legend is included in the group of old Russian literary works about the incest and is a special type of incestuous plot, compositionally close to Oedipus , but different from it by a negative interpretation of the protagonist [1] . The plot underlying the Tale ascribes to the main character a biography of the Greek king Oedipus, who was destined to kill his father and marry his mother.

The legend goes back to Byzantine literary samples, but very early (from the 11th century ) it began to spread throughout Russia in a purely folklore variation on a biblical theme [2] .

The legend is included in the apocryphal “ Passion of Christ ”, popular in Russia, which tells about the last days of Jesus Christ (events from Lazarus Saturday to Easter , with a description of the passage of the righteous from hell ). The work usually consists of 32 chapters, where the final chapter is “The Legend of Jerome about Judas the Traitor”. The legend may have different versions of the titles, more often, “The legend of the church teacher Jerome Saint about Judas the traitor of our Lord Jesus Christ ”
