In 1960, the museum was defined by the scientific and methodological center for coordinating the activities of space museums of the USSR , and in 1979 it received the status of a research institution. In 1993, the State Museum of the History of Cosmonautics named after K. E. Tsiolkovsky was assigned to the largest cultural and educational institutions of special social significance [2] .

Since June 21, 1973, an authentic copy of the Vostok rocket and space complex, which was in reserve during the launch of the Gagarin Vostok-1 [3] , has been exhibited on the territory of the Kaluga Museum of Cosmonautics.

The museum expositions reveal the history of aeronautics , aviation , rocket and space technology. The scientific heritage of Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovsky , the founder of theoretical cosmonautics , a major inventor, author of works on philosophy and sociology , is presented in an exhaustive way. The images of future technology ( aircraft , airship , rocket , ethereal settlements), substantiated by scientists, are presented.

Since 1966, the museum has been conducting scientific readings in memory of K. E. Tsiolkovsky. In the halls of the museum you can get acquainted with the domestic history of practical astronautics , from the first artificial Earth satellite to modern long-term orbital stations . This is the history of the formation of rocketry in the USSR, starting in the 1920s, the activities of prominent chief designers ( S.P. Korolev , V.P. Glushko , V.N. Chelomey , S.A. Kosberg , G.N. Babakin , A.M. Isaev and others). This is a study of the moon and planets of the solar system using automatic interplanetary stations . This is a manned space flight from the "East" to the "Buran" . This is the story of launch vehicles and a collection of rocket engines.

The museum has a model of the base unit of the Mir orbital station , open to the public.

The second stage of the space museum, the construction of which began in 2014, involves the construction of a new modern building with an area of 12.5 thousand m² , which is almost four times the size of the existing one. The exposition area of the museum will increase five times. The completion of the construction was planned for the 50th anniversary of the museum, then it was postponed to December 2017 [4] , but has not yet been completed. The opening of the second stage is scheduled for December 2019 [5] .
