In February, another failure awaited him: the Croatian national team , despite Cilic’s two single victories, was unable to cope with the Italians at the opening meeting of the Davis Cup world group. In the fall, already without Marina, the Balkan team will lose again and for the first time in seven years will fly to the regional zone of the tournament. Cilic’s season continued on the Zagreb / Memphis ligament, where he won his first title of the season, beating Jurgen Meltzer in the final of the home tournament. The subsequent dirt segment did not bring significant success, but Cilic again reached the peak of form, reaching the final of the tournament in London , where he beat Tomas Berdykh and lost to Andy Murray . Further success, however, did not follow: Marin first terminated Wimbledon ahead of schedule due to knee problems, [2] and then sued WADA and ITF for some time because of the niketamide found in his blood, [3] reducing his disqualification from the original nine months [4] to four and a half. [5] Marin returned to the games at the end of October - at the hall tournament in Paris .

The start of the 2014 season went without any noticeable success, but Cilic got the game form in the hall segment at three tournaments in a row: in Zagreb, Rotterdam and Delray Beach, he reached the finals, taking two titles. The series ended in fourth round in Indian Wells , after which the results went into decline. The transition, first to the ground, and then to grass, did not bring much change in the trend: Marin lost to Roland in the third round, but was able to add to Wimbledon , where, having beat Tomas Berdykh, he reached the quarter-finals for the first time in his career. Further, after a short pause, the Croat gradually continued to improve his results: at the tournament in Toronto, he, together with Santiago Gonzalez, made it to the semi-finals in a pair, beating the Brian brothers . Solo tournaments did not bring significant success, but a closer cooperation with Goran Ivanishevich , which began after the disqualification, brought its result. At the US Open in the quarterfinals and semi-finals in three sets, Marin defeated Berdykh and Federer and for the first time in his career made his way to the finals of the Grand Slam tournament, and then won the title, having also outplayed another Grand Slam tournament finals Kei Nishikori from Japan in the finals . He became the first Croatian tennis player to take on the Grand Slam since the performance of his coach Goran Ivanishevich, who won at Wimbledon in 2001.
