It is one of the best state universities in Pakistan. It was founded under the name Islamabad University in 1965. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (then Foreign Minister, later Prime Minister) received money for the opening of the university from the US government.
The university maintains scientific cooperation with a number of universities in the USA, Europe and South Asia. According to the rating of the Higher Education Commission, as of 2006, it was ranked 1st among Pakistani universities. [2] Consists of 4 faculties: natural sciences, social sciences, biological sciences and medical sciences.
