Most Muslims live in Reykjavik or in the suburbs of the capital, but there are a small number of Kosovo Muslim refugees in Dalvik [2] .

Association of Muslims in Iceland

The Association of Muslims in Iceland ( ) was founded in 1997. It is headed by Salmann Tamimi , a Palestinian immigrant [3] . Salmann is also the imam of the Reykjavik Mosque [4] .

Mosques

Since 2002, the Association has its own Reykjavik mosque [5] . The mosque hosts day and night services, which attract about 30 people, consisting of local Icelanders and Muslims from different continents. The mosque is located on the 3rd floor in an office building in the Ármúli district of Reykjavik.

In 2000, the Muslim Association applied for the construction of another mosque in Reykjavik [6] . However, the city did not approve the plan, believing that mosques would compete among themselves. After a lengthy process, a building permit was granted on July 6, 2013.

In 2019, the project for the construction of a second mosque in Reykjavik is still under development [7] .
