Bolotov, Vasily Vasilievich

Vasily Bolotov comes from the old clergy of the Tver diocese . For several generations, his ancestors served in the village of Savtsyno of the Kashinsky district and bore the surname of the Savtsynsky, and then received the surname of the Bolotovs. Father - Vasily Timofeevich Bolotov - was the deacon of the Trinity Cathedral in Ostashkov .

At the end of the Ostashkovsky Theological College in 1869, Vasily Bolotov entered the Tver Theological Seminary , and in 1875 - at the St. Petersburg Theological Academy . In 1879 he defended his master's thesis "The teaching of Origen about the Holy Trinity."

He was a professor of ancient church history at the St. Petersburg Theological Academy ^[1] . Since 1893, Bolotov was a corresponding member of the Imperial Academy of Sciences , and in 1896 received a doctorate in church history.

Vasily Bolotov knew the ancient classical languages ​​(Jewish, Syriac, Arabic, etc.) and a number of European languages; studied Coptic, Armenian, Georgian and Persian. In total, he knew over 20 languages ^[2] .

In 1898, Bolotov took part in the annexation of the Syro-Chaldean Nestorians to Orthodoxy , for this purpose he translated into Syriac a number of necessary religious formulas; in 1900, Bolotov was appointed as a delegate to a special commission at the Astronomical Society to coordinate the Orthodox calendar with the Western European ^[3] . After his death, this work was continued by Dmitry Golubinsky ^[4] .

Vasily Bolotov died on April 5 ( 18 ), 1900 and was buried at the Nikolsky cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra . His last words were: “Christ is coming, God is coming. I go to Christ ” ^[5] .

On June 9, 2014, a memorial plaque dedicated to Vasily Bolotov was opened in the Church of the Introduction of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the village of Kravotyn ^[6] .
