Biography

Born in a Hasidic family (his hometown was the center of the Chabad movement ), in childhood he knew only Yiddish . Self-taught Russian language in the early 1920s, when he arrived in Petrograd to study. In 1921 he entered the University of Petrograd , in 1922 he transferred to the theater department of the Institute of Art History , where he studied until 1928.

From 1926 to 1928 member of the literary group “ Oberiu ” (“Oberiuts”), which included Daniil Harms , Alexander Vvedensky , Nikolai Zabolotsky . Levin was the only "pure" prose writer among the Oberiuts. His book, written in the spirit of the Oberiuts - “The Origin of Theocritus” - was not preserved. He participated in the production of the play by Harms " Elizabeth Bam ".

According to Bakhterev , he met Kharms one evening at P. Marcel and was one of his closest friends. According to I.V. Bakhterev, Levin's stories influenced Kharms' prose and dramaturgy [1] .

In the memoirs of L. Panteleev, Levin is called a pupil of Harms. Marshak , beating the meaning of the name Doyvber - a bear, called Levin "Himalayan bear" [2] .

In 1930 , Levin began to publish books for children and youth ("Flight of Herr Dumkopf"). In 1931 , the book “Ten Carriages” was published about the Leningrad Jewish orphanage, built as a cycle of stories — children's memories of life in places of the Pale of Settlement, the horrors of the civil war and pogroms. Levin’s novels on Jewish themes include “Street of Shoemakers”, 1932 (on the path to the revolution of the artisan’s son), “Free states of Slavichi”, 1932 (on the 33-hour period of the anarchist gang’s power in a Jewish town), “Likhovo” (on the life of small townsmen poor artisans), especially in the last two, the dense household color prevails.

In 1936, according to Levin’s script, the film “ Fedka ” was released, dedicated to the heroics of the civil war [3] , in which the roles were played by Peter Aleinikov and Vasily Merkuryev . Later, the novel of the same name by Levin ( 1939 ) was published.

Levin died on the Leningrad Front.

In the memoirs of contemporaries

... And around the corner, on Chekhov Street , my dear friend Boris Levin lived [ Indeed, according to the passport, his name was Doivber , that is, a Hebrew bear ( doyv ) and a bear in modern Jewish ( ber ) ]. Lived and will no longer live. Not here and nowhere in this world ...

Unlike his teacher Harms , he was hopelessly gloomy, the German invasion scared him. Cheerful, good-natured, baggy, S. Ya. Marshak called him a " Himalayan bear ", hinting partly on his appearance, partly on the name of Levin *, - cozy, something very similar to the dearest L. M. Kvitko , Boris Mikhailovich suddenly, in front of us, I lost all my comfort, all optimism. Back in 1939 , when the Germans, having stopped playing hide and seek, openly went to “conquer the world,” he told me (or repeated someone’s words):

- In the world all the lights went out.

And yet, in the very first days of the war, he went to sign up for the militia. Since he, like all of us, was a reserve officer, he was sent to KUKS, that is, to courses for improving command staff. There he studied for three or four months. Then he was assigned to the front, which was already very close. Boris Mikhailovich died in open battle - on a railway track, 25 kilometers from the Mga station. The first German, whom he saw, extinguished for him all the lights, and the sun, and the stars ...
