History

The first train arrived at the station from Krasnoyarsk on August 16, 1898 .

The building of the Irkutsk railway station was built in 1897 - 1898 . and rebuilt in 1906 - 1907 . In 1936, between the two buildings of different times, a passage was erected in the same architectural style as the buildings.

In 1964, a pavilion was built to serve commuters, a pedestrian tunnel was built, rooms were redesigned, and the station square was expanded and improved. The main part of the structure was made on the basis of the standard project “Passenger building for a class II station” using the architectural forms of classicism : high arched windows, the design of the main facade as a portico, etc. The construction of 1906-1907 and 1936 was also carried out in compliance with classical traditions : symmetry, static, order building.

In 1998 , by the centenary of the Trans-Siberian Railway , the station was completely reconstructed; in 2004, the suburban pavilion was reconstructed.

Today, the station building is a complex of four buildings of different times, with a total area of 7590 m 2 [4] . The building is an architectural monument of federal significance.

In 1956, after the construction of the Irkutsk hydroelectric station was completed, the Zima - Irkutsk - Slyudyanka section was electrified with a direct current of 3 kV. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Trans-Siberian Railway from Slyudyanka to the east, and from Zima to the west was electrified by alternating current , Slyudyanka and Zima became docking stations . In 1995, the Zima - Irkutsk - Slyudyanka section was switched to an alternating current of 25 kV; the Slyudyanka and Zima stations ceased to be docking stations .
