History

The name arose in the 19th century. Given on the tract Maiden’s Field located here (in the XIX century - a favorite place for festivities of Muscovites). It was a plot of flat terrain adjacent to the Novodevichy Convent . The people called the monastery simply the Maiden (as the maiden’s monastery it was also named in the spiritual prince Vasily III , who founded it). Hence the name of the field. There is no historical confirmation of the legend according to which the Tatar Basques here selected the girls and took them to the Horde in payment of tribute. In the XIV century, the area was known as Samsonov meadow; formed from the canonical name (or surname) of the land owner.
