Biography
In 1978 he entered the historical and philological faculty of the Arkhangelsk State Pedagogical Institute . In 1980 he was transferred to the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute named after V.I. Lenin , which he graduated in 1984. In the same year he was hired by the Institute of General History of the USSR Academy of Sciences , but then was called up for military service. Returning to the IVI, where he still works, in 1988 he defended his thesis for the degree of candidate of historical sciences, “Socio-Political Views of J. MacIntosh and the Great French Revolution” [1] .
In the 1980s and the first half of the 1990s, he specialized mainly in the history of English public thought of the 18th-19th centuries. (works of E. Burke , W. Godwin , J. MacIntosh , T. Payne and others) and the influence of the French Revolution on it. The result of these studies was summed up in a thesis defended in 1997 for the degree of Doctor of Historical Sciences, “Reflections of the British on the French Revolution: E. Burke, J. MacIntosh, and W. Godwin” [2] .
Since the late 1980s, Chudinov also began to actively develop the problems of the historiography of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, first of all, conservative ( O. Koshen ) and “critical” (A. Cobben, F. Fure and others).
In 1988, he organized the “round table” “Actual problems of studying the history of the Great French Revolution” (1988), which marked the gradual withdrawal of most of the domestic historians of the French Revolution of the XVIII century. from the Marxist paradigm.
In the 1990s, Chudinov studied European utopian thought of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and, in particular, the political ideas of the Robespierists ( M. Robespierre , L. A. Saint-Just, and J. Couton ), who, in his opinion, made an attempt during the Terror era put the utopian ideal into practice. In 1995, he held a round table discussion “Jacobinism in the historical results of the Great French Revolution”.
Since 1995, takes part in the Russian-French project of publishing the personal archive of Gilbert Romm , a prominent figure in the French Revolution of the Jacobin period. The result of research on this issue was the monograph "Gilbert Romm and Pavel Stroganov: the history of an unusual union", awarded the international prize to them. A. Leroy-Beaulieu 2010.
Also in the 1990s, together with Dmitry Bovykin and other historians of the “new Russian school”, Chudinov made a conceptual historiographic turn associated with the rejection of the predominantly Marxist perception of the French Revolution as a transition from feudalism to capitalism and clearly manifested at the “round table” French Revolution XVIII centuries and the bourgeoisie ”(2001). He formulated a new paradigm (the sensational article“ Farewell to the era ”became its program manifesto) implies a rejection of the unambiguous perception of French of the revolution and its heroes with a plus sign (as was customary in Soviet times) or a minus sign (as conservative historiography does), as well as avoiding unjustified generalizations that are not based on the study of realities.
Since 2000 - chief editor of the international publication French Yearbook . In 2018, he was awarded the Silver medal of the la Renaissance Française association for his services in this post in disseminating the achievements of French culture.
In the 2000s, in addition to the problems of the French Revolution, Chudinov developed various aspects of the history of Franco-Russian relations of the Enlightenment, in particular the theme of the activities of French tutors in Russia. He initiated and participated in a number of relevant international projects, the interim results of which were summed up at the conference “French-speaking Governor in Europe of the 17th-19th centuries” in 2009.
In 2010-2014, he was director of the Franco-Russian Center for Historical Anthropology. Blok’s mark at the Russian State Humanitarian University , suggested using the methods of historical anthropology to study the mentality of Russian peasants during the Patriotic War of 1812 , primarily their archetypal representations of the image of the enemy. In 2011, he held a "round table" "The Patriotic War of 1812: current issues of modern historiography."
Since 2014, he has been the Head of the World in the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars Laboratory, IVI RAS and the Department of Historical Regional Studies of the State Academic University for the Humanities (GAUGN), specializing mainly in the study of popular movements of protest against the forcible adoption of the French Revolutionary value system in regions with a dominant traditional culture [3] , in particular, in Egypt [4] and in Italy [5] . In 2018, he was awarded the N. I. Kareev Prize of the Russian Academy of Sciences for a series of scientific works on the history of the French Revolution and the era of the Napoleonic Wars: “French Revolution: History and Myths,” “History of the French Revolution: Ways of Knowledge,” “Old Order in France and Its wreck.
