History

The foundation of the temple was laid in 1908 . Construction was slow, and after the outbreak of World War I it was completely stopped. Due to material difficulties of the community, construction work was resumed only in 1926 . J. Komisar became an engineer and construction manager . The church was consecrated on September 22, 1928 in honor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.

During the Second World War, due to shelling of German troops, the church burned down, only brick walls remained. After the war, the chapel was restored. Prayer was donated many icons. Most of the donors are Moscow Old Believers. Especially significant are the works of the Vilnius icon painter Ivan Mikhailov . He painted the icons of the deesis and festive series of the iconostasis “The Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos” and “Saint Nicholas in the Life”.

In 1983, in honor of the 75th anniversary of the temple, it was renovated. In 1988 , on the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of the baptism of Rus , the construction of a six-tier iconostasis was completed. In 1993, a chapel was built near the church on the donations of parishioners, which is used mainly for the commemoration of the reading of the psalms of the dead. In 2002, an icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was installed above the entrance, canonically executed by Nikolai Portnov [2] . In 2007 - 2008, the domes were repaired and gilded. On December 19, 2007, the grand opening of the first golden dome at the bell tower of the temple took place [3] .

Architecture

The temple is a rectangular building with a bell tower, crowned with two chapters (above the entrance and the central part of the building). The temple was built in the Russian style with elements of the Art Nouveau style. The interior of the temple is decorated with a six-tier iconostasis with icons of the XVII - XX centuries . There is one of the richest collections of icons in Latvia.
