The key ( Greek κλειδοῦχος - “ key ” [1] ) - the post of priest of the cathedral and cathedral temples , serving as deputy priest . Such a position appeared due to the fact that the rector of the cathedral is usually the rector of the cathedral church of the diocese . In addition, the keys of the sacristy and church utensils were also called keys. [2] [3] .
The key-keeper manages the church utensils , keeps the keys to the temple, and oversees the order of the service [4] . According to the Council Code of 1649 , the dishonor inflicted on the key, was punished more severely than the ordinary priest (30 and 25 rubles, respectively) [5] .
The key can have assistants - podcarya [6] . In monasteries, duties similar to the key- keeper are performed by the economy [7] .
