Biography
From 1907 to 1910 he studied at the theological faculty of Wroclaw University. On June 22, 1911, he was ordained priest by Bishop George Kopp . The first years of his priesthood, serving in the territory of Upper Silesia , which was at that time in Germany, he spent together with prominent Polish public figures and priests Norbert Bonchik and Jan Kapitsa . Familiarity with them significantly influenced his political and social views. From 1918 to 1924, he worked as the editor-in-chief of the periodical Voice over Odra, which protected the rights of the Polish-speaking population of Upper Silesia. After the creation of the Apostolic Administration for Catholic Poles of Upper Silesia in 1922, he was appointed Chancellor of the Apostolic Curia . In 1926 he was appointed rector of Pope Pius XI in the parish of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary .
He was one of the first Polish scientists who entered the twenties of the 20th century into a scientific dialogue with German scientists living in Upper Silesia, building their relations with them on the basis of tolerance and denying German chauvinism and nationalism . Being a bibliophile and antiquary , he was one of the initiators of the formation of the Silesian Library and the Museum of Silesia in Katowice. The fruit of his many years of cultural activities aimed at the revival of Polish culture in Upper Silesia was the book “Silesia is a social problem” (Śląsk jako problem socjologiczny) published in 1934 in Katowice.
Since the beginning of the occupation of Poland in 1939 by German troops, he was confronted with repression by the German authorities of the Third Reich , which in every way prevented him from fulfilling his pastoral duties, engaging in cultural and social activities. He was arrested on April 8, 1940 and interned at the Mauthausen concentration camp, on December 8, 1940, he was taken to the Dachau concentration camp, where he was executed by douche with ice water on January 13, 1942.
