History
The father of Bogdan Khmelnitsky, Mikhail at the beginning of the XVII century, received an uninhabited tract in the lands of Chigirinsky elder on the lands of the Chigirinsky elder over the Tyasmin River in his lifetime possession from Stanislav Zholkevsky . In the 1630s, through the efforts of the Khmelnitsky family, this was already a rich farm with a pans house, a mill, a pond and a large garden. To this farm, Bogdan personally asked the Polish king Vladislav IV for the steppe lands across the river, which were inhabited by peasants and who paid Khmelnitsky tax. On these lands were apiaries, threshing floor and taverns [1] .
In 1653, the Ilyinsky church was built opposite the Hetman's palace.
Elias Church
The Ilyinsky church , or the church of the holy prophet Elijah, began to be erected in 1653 , by order, project, and at the expense of Bohdan Khmelnytsky .
The church was also a defensive structure. In plan it is almost square, its dimensions are 18.19 by 15.91 meters with a hexagonal ledge of the altar in the east. The thickness of the walls is about 2 meters.
In 1657, Bogdan Khmelnitsky was buried in it.
In 1869, the church was restored and a bell tower was erected near it.
In Soviet times , the temple was closed twice. Since 1990, the church has been operating again.
The image of the Elijah Church is present on the back of a 5- hryvnia denomination.
