Childhood and Education
Paul Hartling is the son of Mads Hartling , Minister of Education from 1947 to 1949 . Both of his parents worked as teachers. In 1939 he graduated from the theological faculty and in 1945 became a teacher. Then he worked as a priest and teacher. In 1959 he became rector of a teacher training college.
Political Activities
In 1957, Paul Hartling was elected to Folketing as a member of the Venstre- (Left — Venstre ) party. He was not re-elected in the 1960 election, but was elected again in the next election.
In 1965, Pole Hartling took office as chairman of the Wenstre. In 1968, he formed the government along with the radical Left ( Det radikale Venstre ) and the Conservative People's Party . Pole Hartling did not become Prime Minister in this government, but became Minister of Foreign Affairs. The head of government was Hilmar Bownsgård . After losing the 1971 election, the government resigned.
Prime Minister
But after the so-called “ Landslide Election ” of December 1973 , Pole Hartling became Danish Prime Minister. His government had the narrowest parliamentary support in Danish history . Members of Venstre only took 22 seats out of 175 seats in parliament. But the Paul Hartling government could still work, because there was no majority in the parliament against the government.
In the 1975 elections, Paul Hartling almost doubled the number of seats for Wenstre in parliament, but he still could not form a government because he did not want to be dependent on the populist party, namely on the party of progress ( Fremskridtspartiet ).
Hardling International
After another defeat in the 1977 election, Paul Hartling left politics. A year later, he became the UN High Commissioner for Refugees . In 1981, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. In 1985, he resigned as High Commissioner.
Death
Pole Hartling died in 2000 and is buried in Horsholm .
