Characteristics
The supernova was discovered, perhaps, by the youngest astronomer in history — fourteen-year-old Carolyn Moore . [2] While working for the Puckett Observatory Supernova Search Team ( Eng. Puckett Observatory Supernova Search Team ) for several months, in November 2008 she discovered something strange in the pictures. After making a phone call to the secretariat of the International Astronomical Union , she announced the possible discovery of a supernova. Subsequent observations have shown [3] that SN 2008ha belongs to an unknown class of supernova explosions. The brightness period did not exceed 10 days , which is similar to SN 2002cx-like objects (up to 15 days of flash duration). Ultraviolet , optical and infrared photometry showed that the flash was extremely dim for this kind of event. The bolometric luminosity allowed us to determine the flash intensity at the peak — about (9.5 ± 1.4) 10 40 erg / s. During the explosion, (3.0 ± 0.9) ⋅10 −3 M ☉ 56 Ni isotope was formed. The kinetic energy of the explosion was 2⋅10 45 erg, about 0.15 M ☉ of stellar matter was ejected into the outer space.
As part of the International Year of Astronomy , iOptron Corporation ( Boston , USA ) awarded Caroline the honorary title of the youngest astronomer of the year. [four]
