Club career
The early years
Tarnat played football at the Hilden Nord Club from 1979 to 1990. The first professional club of the football player was the Bundesliga 2 club “Duisburg” , in which he made his debut in August 1991 in a home match against “ Stuttgart ”.
On August 27, 1993, he scored his first goal in the Bundesliga , bringing a 1-1 draw to Duisburg in a away match against the Leipzig Lokomotiv .
In the summer of 1994 he moved to Karlsruhe, where he soon became one of the team's leading players, along with Thomas Hessler and Torsten Fink . His hallmark was a strong left kick, which made him one of the best performers of the Bundesliga free kick in the mid-90s. For three seasons with the club, Tarnat played 81 matches in the Bundesliga and scored seven goals.
In 1996, he was drafted into the German team for the first time: he made his debut in the qualifying match for the 1998 World Cup in the match against the Armenian team on October 9, 1996.
Bayern
In 1997, Tarnat’s finest hour came when Bavaria bought it with Fink from Karlsruhe. Tarnat's rival on the left flank was Bixant Lizarazu . Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld often used both of them alternately, giving Bayern one of the best left flanks in Europe .
Together with Bayern, Tarnat became the German champion in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003, won the German football cup in 1998, 2000 and 2003 and the UEFA Champions League in 2001. Tarnat also played in 1999 in the Champions League final, in which Bayern lost 1-1 to Manchester United , missing twice in stoppage time.
In the 1999/2000 season, in the away match of the Bundesliga against Eintracht , Tarnat got in the second half. This happened after Oliver Kahn left the field due to an injury sustained in a collision with a teammate, Samuel Kuffur . Kahn's substitute, Bernd Dreer , was also injured 10 minutes after entering the field. As a result, Tarnat came on as a substitute and took a place in the goal. Bayern at that moment lost 0-1, but just two minutes after Tarnat came on as a substitute, she evened the score, and in the 80th minute, thanks to Kuffur's goal, went ahead 2: 1. As a result, the match ended with the victory of Bayern 2: 1.
Meanwhile, Tarnat’s career was developing unevenly - in the late 90s he often suffered from injuries, sat on the bench of Bayern Munich, lost his place in the German national team.
Manchester City and Hanover
In 2003 he moved to Manchester City, played 32 matches in the Premier League and scored three goals. The following year he signed a contract with Hannover, where after 5 years he ended his career.
On May 17, 2009, it was announced that he would quit professional football. He played his last match for Hannover on July 29, 2009 against Arsenal . In August 2009, Tarnat returned to Bavaria Munich as a scout [2] .
Team Career
Tarnat was the main player in the German national team at the 1998 World Cup in France : he entered the field in four of the five matches played by the team in the tournament. In the group round game against Yugoslavia, his free kick led to Sinishi Mikhailovich's own goal.
