Geography

The village is located on the left bank of the Vorotan River near the Angeakot reservoir , 14 km west of Sisian , at a distance of 3 km. southwest of the Yerevan - Goris highway . Previously, the village was a major road junction, as the road to Nakhchivan , which is the fastest way from Azerbaijan to the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, passes through it. But in connection with the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict and the blockade of Armenia imposed by Azerbaijan since 1988 on the section of the Angekakhot-Nakhichevan highway to the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, which is located on the Bichenak pass (2346 m), only three villages are running ( Shagat , Bartsravan and Balak ) , as well as military border transport, which patrols this section of the border. The border is naturally closed and there is no movement through it. There is a highway to the north to Yerevan, the nearest village - Spandaryan is located 7 km. There is a highway to the east to Goris, Kapan , the unrecognized NKR and Iran , and the nearest village is Shaki , 7 km away. To the south is the Angehakot reservoir on the Vorotan River. In the west there is a highway to Shahbuz and Nakhichevan, but civilian cars run only to the village of Shagat , which is 4 km away. In Shagat there is a fork to the village of Balak , located on the opposite shore of the reservoir from Angehakot, and to the high-mountain village of Bartsravan.

In order to build a new Kajaran - Sisian- Angehakot- Jermuk - Ararat gas pipeline (the second part of the Iran-Armenia gas pipeline) with a length of 197.4 km, ArmRosgazprom imported the first batch of pipes with a diameter of 720 mm to Armenia. [one]

History and Culture

There are hunting scenes on the tombstones of the village of Angehakot: a hunter on a horse holding a falcon in his right hand and a goblet in his left hand. The deer, horse and various birds in the process of movement are also shown there [2] .

In April 1699, under the leadership of a prominent political figure, Israel Ori , a meeting of Armenian meliks (princes) was held, which adopted an appeal to the Russian court: “Our thoughts are about all of us being servants of your great kingdom” [3] .

In the town of Godedzor, near the village, an ancient settlement was discovered, dating back to the Eneolithic era, namely, to the time interval of the first half of V - the first half of IV millennium BC. e., according to scientists, occupied an area of 15 hectares. Found materials inherent in Ubayd culture, which indicates close long-term contact with the inhabitants of the Armenian Highlands and Northern Mesopotamia. This monument testifying to the stay of the “Ubaydts” is the only one of its kind in the South Caucasus region, discovered at an altitude of 1800 m above sea level. In Godedzor, a large number of painted Ubeid painted ceramics were found, parallels of which are found in the Southern and Northern Mesopotamia. Perhaps, scientists say, the "Ubaydts" here founded a small merchant trading post. One way or another, the find of archaeologists will help fill the gaps of ancient eras and civilizations with documentary evidence [4] .
