History

The need to build a new marine passenger terminal was caused by the inability of the existing Marine Station to accept cruise ships longer than 200 meters. As a result, large passenger ships arrived at the trading port of St. Petersburg . In 2002, the administration of St. Petersburg proposed the construction of a modern complex for receiving cruise ships. The corresponding order to begin construction of the marine passenger terminal was signed in 2005 by the Prime Minister of Russia M. Fradkov [10] [11] . The project also envisaged dredging and reconstruction of the Approach and Petrovsky Canals with a length of 10 kilometers [12] .

In September 2008, the first phase of the Passenger Port of St. Petersburg was opened, consisting of one sea station for cruise ships and two berths. On September 10, the Passenger Port of St. Petersburg received the first cruise ship - Costa Mediterranea [13] . In 2010, the second stage of the Passenger Port of St. Petersburg began operations, consisting of one cruise and one cruise-ferry stations, as well as three berths. The construction of the Passenger Port of St. Petersburg was completed in 2011 with the construction of another cruise station and two berths.

On May 27, 2011, on the day of the city of St. Petersburg, with the participation of Governor Valentina Matvienko , a ceremony was held to transfer the first and only specialized Passenger Port of St. Petersburg "Marine Facade" to the city [2] [14] in Northwest Russia.

Operation

Technical Data

Vessels with a maximum length of 330 m and a draft of up to 8.8 m can moor at the port. The total length of the berth wall is 2171 m, the depth of the Podkhodny and Petrovsky canals is 11 m, which allows you to receive the largest cruise ships in the Baltic. In the Passenger Port of St. Petersburg there is a treatment station for supplying drinking water to ships and equipment for receiving sewage water and dry garbage from ships [1] [2] .

Accepted ships

In the tourist season cruise ships regularly come to the Passenger Port of St. Petersburg. To attract foreign tourists arriving by cruise and ferry vessels, a visa-free regime of 72-hour stay in Russia is in effect [17] .

Ferry Service

In March 2011, with the commissioning of the cruise-ferry station to the Passenger Port of St. Petersburg, the Princess Maria ferry, operating from St. Petersburg to Helsinki , operator St. Peter Line , formerly departing from the Marine Station [18] . However, these plans were not implemented - since the fall of 2011, the ferries Princess Maria and Princess Anastasia are again based at the Naval Station [19] [20] The refusal to combine disembarkation and unloading of ships was argued by the inability of the Vasileostrovsky district road network to withstand the growth of load after the arrival of ferries with cars [21] . Also in 2011, it was planned to open new lines connecting St. Petersburg with Germany and Poland . It was assumed that the lines would be used not only for passenger traffic, but also for the delivery of goods by road trains [22] . According to the Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Viktor Olersky, until Vasilievsky Island is connected to the Western High-Speed Diameter , the Passenger Port of St. Petersburg will not be used as a cargo and passenger port [21] . On March 13, 2015, Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation D. A. Medvedev signed an order to change the classification of a checkpoint across the state border of the Russian Federation in the seaport “Passenger Port of St. Petersburg” according to the nature of international traffic from passenger to cargo-passenger No. 413-r [23] [24] . The decision made by the Government of the Russian Federation to change the classification of the checkpoint across the state border in the Passenger Port of St. Petersburg creates the conditions for organizing year-round ferry services on a regular basis with the provision of a full range of services for ferry vessels, including the possibility of handling rolling cargo.
