Texts

Kidd's ballad consists of 25 quatrains. During the two centuries of the 18th - 19th centuries , the ballad was very popular in America , often reprinted and performed. However, over time, the plot underwent significant changes, the tone of the ballad became more gloomy, turning from hypocritical repentance, into the wailing of the sinner.

Early Version

Part of the original ballad ( English ):
Russian (subscript) translation:

My name was Captain Kidd, when I sail'd, when I sail'd,
And so wickedly I did, God's laws I did forbid,
When I sail'd, when I sail'd.

I roam'd from sound to sound, And many a ship I found
And them I sunk or burn'd. When I sail'd.
I murder'd William Moore, And laid him in his gore,
Not many leagues from shore, When I sail'd.

Farewell to young and old, All jolly seamen bold,
You're welcome to my gold, For I must die, I must die.
Farewell to London town, The pretty girls all round,

No pardon can be found, and I must die, I must die,
Farewell, for I must die. Then to eternity, in hideous misery,
I must lie, I must lie.

My name was William Kidd when I was swimming, when I was swimming.
And I was so bad that I refused the laws of God,
When I was swimming, when I was swimming.

I wandered here and there, met many ships,
Which I drowned and burned when I swam.
I killed William Moore, and left him in the blood,
A couple of leagues from the shore when I was swimming.

Goodbye, young and old, all funny and brave guys,
You are attracted by my gold, because of which I will die, I will die.
Goodbye London and the beautiful girls around

There will be no mercy, I must die, I must die,
Goodbye, I have to die. And there in eternity, in black poverty,
I have to rest, I have to rest. [one]

And so wickedly I did,
When I sailed.

When I sailed, when I sailed,
My parents taught me well,

I'd a Bible in my hand,
When I sailed, when I sailed,
I'd a Bible in my hand,
When I sailed,
I'd a Bible in my hand,
By my father's great command,
And I sunk it in the sand,
When I sailed.

I murdered William Moore,
As I sailed, as I sailed
I murdered William Moore,
As I sailed,
I murdered William Moore,
And laid him in his gore,
Not many leagues from shore,
As i sailed.

I was sick and nigh to death,
As I sailed, as I sailed

As I sailed,
I was sick and nigh to death,
And I vowed with every breath,
To walk in wisdom's ways,
When I sailed.

I thought I was undone,
As I sailed, as I sailed
I thought I was undone,
As I sailed,

As I sailed, as I sailed
My repentance lasted not,
As I sailed,

As i sailed.

I spied three ships from Spain,
As I sailed, as I sailed
I spied three ships from Spain,
As I sailed,

Till most of them were slain,
As i sailed.

I'd ninety bars of gold,
As I sailed, as I sailed
I'd ninety bars of gold,
As I sailed,
I'd ninety bars of gold,
And dollars manifold,
With riches uncontrolled,
As i sailed.

Thus being o'ertaken at last,
As I sailed, as I sailed
Thus being o'ertaken at last,
As I sailed,
Thus being o'ertaken at last,
And into prison cast,
And sentence being passed,
As i sailed.

Farewell, the raging main,
I must die, I must die,
Farewell, the raging main,
I must die,
Farewell, the raging main,
To Turkey, France, and Spain,
I shall never see you again,
For I must die.

To the Execution Dock,
I must go, I must go,
To the Execution Dock,
I must go,

While many thousands flock,
But I must bear the shock,
And must die.

Come all ye young and old,
And see me die, see me die,
Come all ye young and old,
And see me die,
Come all ye young and old,
You're welcome to my gold,
For by it I've lost my soul,
And must die.

Take a warning now by me,
For I must die, I must die,
Take a warning now by me,
For I must die,
Take a warning now by me,
And shun bad company,
Let you come to hell with me,
For I must die.

When I sailed.

To be executed in the dock,
Under the gazes of thousands in the crowd
Where I still cause fear
I have to die

Come all, young and old,
See me die. Watch me die.
Come all, young and old,
See me die. Watch me die.
Come all, young and old,
You are attracted to my gold
Because of which I lost my soul
And must die.

Draw conclusions from my misfortune
For which I must die, for which I must die.
Draw conclusions from my misfortune
For which I must die, for which I must die.

And avoid the bad companies
Otherwise, go to hell with me
Because I have to die.

Notes

  1. ↑ For several centuries, desperate treasure hunters tried to find Kidd’s treasure, buried by him on one of the islands of the Caribbean, before surrendering to the authorities. According to these rumors, Kidd, in his letter of clemency addressed to Lord Bellamont, wanted in exchange for his life to discover the secret of this particular treasure. But for some reason he didn’t.
  2. ↑ In the meaning of English. Execution Dock - a special place at the docks of Tower Hamlets ( London ), where pirates were executed
