Biography

Noel Kunihan was born on October 4, 1913 in one of the suburbs of Melbourne , the capital of the Australian state of Victoria . In 1928, he attended Kofield Gymnasium. From 1930 to 1931, he took lessons from Charles Wheeler at the National Gallery of the Victoria School of Art in Melbourne, where he met with representatives of the school of social realism , artists Herbert McClinthoke and Roy Dalgarno .

Social realism, which is characterized by a reflection of the realities of capitalist society, was the artistic doctrine of the Communist Party of Australia , of which Kunihan became a member in 1931 . Subsequently, he took up the creation of drawings (including satirical), engravings on linoleum for the covers of communist magazines and brochures.

During the Great Depression, Kunihán took part in strikes in Brunswick, one of the suburbs of Melbourne, organized by the Communist Party in response to the passing of the law of the state of Victoria prohibiting "subversive" meetings.

Since 1934, Kunihan worked as a cartoonist in various Australian journals, including The Bulletin and the Guardian (from 1945 - 1949 , 1952 - 1958 ). During World War II, he was hospitalized several times because of tuberculosis .

With the support of Israeli artist Josl Bergner began painting, developing his personal style based on the ideals of social realism. The main theme of his paintings was the life and struggle of Australian workers. [1] Subsequently, his works were exhibited in art galleries in Australia, Europe and the USSR , in addition, some of Kunihan’s paintings are part of the permanent exhibition of the National Gallery of Australia . [2] Twice won first place in the competition “Australia during the war” ( Eng. Australia At War ), in 1948 received the Albury Prize ( Eng. Albury Prize ), in 1956 and 1957 - the Crouch Prize ( Eng. Crouch Prize ) , in 1958 - the McCofi Memorial Prize ( Eng. McCaughey Memorial Prize ), in 1959 - the bronze medal at the International Exhibition of Fine Arts in Leipzig . [3]

Until the end of his life, Kunihan was faithful to the ideals of communism , while remaining a member of the Communist Party of Australia. Died July 5, 1986 in Melbourne.
