Title History
The program was written in 1999 by Mark Spencer as an emulator of AOL Instant Messenger for Linux using the GTK + toolkit . It was named "GTK + AOL Instant Messenger" respectively. After America Online demanded that the acronym “AOL” be removed from the name of the program, it was replaced by the abbreviation “Gaim”. However, later the trademark “AIM” was also registered by AOL, which led to the emergence of new claims.
After analyzing possible risks and a series of persistent warnings from AOL / Time Warner, the Gaim development team decided not to use the name “Gaim”. The program was renamed to Pidgin [6] , the libgaim library to libpurple, and the gaim-text console client to Finch.
After another name change, the protracted series of beta versions ended - on May 3, 2007, Pidgin 2.0.0 was released.
