The island is located in the central part of the archipelago, between the islands of Livingston (Smolensk) and Greenwich (Berezina) .
The island has a small population of seals and penguins . Seagulls nest from the sea due to the removal of large quantities of algae , and whales graze near the island.
Half Moon Island is one of the most convenient landing sites among a large number of Antarctic islands. Since 1953, the Argentinean Antarctic station Camara has been located on the island (until 1988 the station was year-round, since then it has been inhabited only in the summer). Beautiful views of the mountains on the nearby island of Livingston attract tourists.
