The capital of the solar eclipse was northern Australia Queensland , the city of Cairns - the only major city in which the moon completely covered the sun. Of interest was a small town north of Cairns - Port Douglas , in which the total eclipse phase lasted 3 seconds longer and the eastern side of the horizon was more open. The best weather during the eclipse was 55-80 km west of the coast in the vicinity of Mount Carbine .
