Interesting Facts

  • The first championship when the new head coach - Viktor Tikhonov became the head of the Soviet team.
  • The tournament in Prague was farewell for two prominent Czechoslovak masters - Jiri Goleček and OldΕ™ich MahÑč (both are three-time world champions).
  • The late start of the championship allowed the Canadian national team to wait for professional players to drop out of the first stage of the Stanley Cup . This contributed to the conquest of the first World Cup medals after 1968.
  • The Czechoslovakian national team played at home and over the final two rounds had an advantage both in the total difference of the pucks and in person (2 pucks of advantage). But in the penultimate round, the USSR team won by a large margin, and the Czechoslovak team won with only one goal, so it was enough for the USSR team to defeat rivals in the final match with a difference of 2 goals. That the USSR team did (3: 1), regaining the championship title after 3 years.
