Cosmonautics Day is celebrated first in the USSR , and then in Russia and other countries of the post-Soviet space on April 12, the date set to commemorate the first manned space flight .

History and Celebration
On April 12, 1961, the Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, on the Vostok-1 spacecraft, launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome and made the first orbit around the planet Earth . Near-Earth space flight lasted 1 hour 48 minutes.
In the Soviet Union, the holiday was established by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of April 9, 1962 . Celebrated under the name Cosmonautics Day . This holiday was established at the suggestion of the second Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR German Titov , who applied to the Central Committee of the CPSU with the corresponding proposal on March 26, 1962 [1] .
World Aviation and Cosmonautics Day is celebrated on the same day according to the protocol (p. 17) of the 61st General Conference of the International Aviation Federation , held in November 1968 and the decision of the Council of the International Aviation Federation, adopted on April 30, 1969 on the proposal of the USSR Aviation Sports Federation [ 2] .
In the Russian Federation , Cosmonautics Day is celebrated in accordance with Article 1.1 of the Federal Law of March 13, 1995 No. 32-ФЗ “On the Days of Military Glory and Memorable Dates of Russia” [3] .
International Human Space Day
On April 7, 2011, at a special plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly , a resolution was adopted that officially proclaimed April 12 as the International Day of Human Space Flight . Co-sponsors of the resolution were more than 60 states [4] .
Other events of the day
Exactly twenty years after the first manned space flight, on April 12, 1981, the first manned flight was launched under the US Space Shuttle program.
In honor of both of these events, in many cities around the world since 2001, a party-event " St. George's Night " has been held. The organizer is the Space Generation Advisory Council , a non-governmental organization that brings together participants from more than 60 countries.
