Biography

At the age of 11, he began studying Basque on his own, at the age of 13 he left his parental family, lived with his father's parents. At sixteen joined ETA . The university was close to the Trotskyists . Persecuted by the police, he moved to Seville , where he studied Romance philology. He defended his thesis at the private university of Deusto (a suburb of Bilbao). During this period, several times went to prison. After 1974, he retired from active political activity. In 1980, he joined the Spanish Communist Party at the time of its rapprochement with the left forces of the Basque Country, shared social democratic positions, opposing the ideas and practices of armed violence adopted by the terrorist wing of ETA. In 1986, he quit KPI, in 1987 he joined the socialist workers' party .

He professes Judaism , speaks with articles about anti-Semitism .

Academic Activities

Headed the Department of Spanish Philology at the University of the Basque Country , he taught at the University of Valencia , New York University, Mexico City and other universities. He was the director of the National Library of Spain ( 2001 - 2004 ), headed the Cervantes Institute , and since 2005 headed the Department of Spanish Literature at the University of Alcala de Henares . Since 2009 - General Director of the Council for Higher Education and Science of the Autonomous Community of Madrid .

Literary creativity

As a poet, he was influenced by the writings of the natives of the Basque Country, Miguel de Unamuno and Blas de Otero , the eminent Basque poet Gabriel Aresti , as well as the poetry of W. H. Oden, who wrote in Spanish. Hoaristi's poetry is distinguished by rich intertextual connections, irony, colloquial speech and everyday life. He writes poems in Spanish, an essay, mainly on the problems of the Basque national self-determination and cultural traditions of the Basque Country, in Basque and Spanish. He owns the transcriptions of Basque folklore, a number of autobiographical works, translations from Spanish into Basque and from Basque into Spanish.
